SUBJECT: JROTC Cadet Leadership Challenge (JCLC) a Complete Success
This past week 318 cadets from 28 schools across Oklahoma and Kansas participated in a very
successful week long leadership camp at Camp Gruber, an Oklahoma National Guard facility near
Muskogee, OK. Cadets arrived throughout the day on Monday, 21 June, and were quickly assigned
to various platoons and companies. As cadets arrived they were given a short time to organize their
living areas which they shared with 20-40 other cadets. They received their first meal, a pre-
packaged "Heater Meal”, learned their company chant and prepared for the opening ceremony at
2000 hours (8:00pm). The Color Guard was provided by South High School and Stephanie Torrie,
from East, sang the National Anthem. The opening ceremony was a motivating event to start off a
fast paced week.
The next morning some cadets were awakened at 0430 hours to get to the rappelling tower before the
heat set in. Other cadets got up an hour later and began the day with PT (physical training). After a
hot breakfast they started their training regime. This schedule would continue throughout the week.
All training was directed towards teamwork and improving leadership skills. Training highlights for
the week were a day at the Tulsa Public Schools Challenge Course, a $3.4 million high ropes course
and the only one of it's kind in the US; a 6+ mile river rafting adventure course down the Illinois
River; and rappelling off a 36 foot tower at Camp Gruber. These were great training events which
were thoroughly enjoyed by the cadets.
Expert medical care was provided by Army Reserve nurses and medics. Fortunately, there were no
serious injuries throughout the week in spite of the blistering heat.
The closing ceremony was conducted on Friday along with a drill competition between companies,
and an end of camp picnic at Greenleaf State Park. The closing ceremony was conducted at the
Activity Center at Tahlequah High School.
Many Wichita cadets were recognized at this ceremony which included Hervey Carraway from
Southeast High School who was selected as the most outstanding cadet at summer camp this year.
Caitlin Sumpter from South was named Company Outstanding Cadet. Platoon Outstanding Cadets
were Zulema Avila, North; Justice Cox, Heights; Michelle Schreck and Richard Moseley from East;
Tori Webb and Andrew Hoheisel from South; Brett Berg and Joshua Johnson, West; and Dakota
Swanson from Northwest.
All of the cadets participating in this exceptional leadership and teambuilding camp will return to
their schools next school year better prepared to assume positions of greater responsibility.
Appreciation goes out to all of the JROTC instructors and others who contributed to the success of
this outstanding Leadership Camp.
A special thanks to Principal Cara Ledy for visiting our camp this year. During her visit she learned
the art of rappelling as witnessed by the attached pictures.
